Geotechnical Engineering is a branch of civil engineering that is dedicated to the study and design of the works that interact with the land. These works can be self-contained (retaining walls, tunnels, dams in the Earth), or they can be a part of more complex organisms (foundations, anchoring). The subjects related to this course are the stratigraphical geology, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, surface foundations deep foundations, the dewatering and others. Geotechnical arises between the Structural and Hydraulic Engineering, because it considers the ground as as a continuous phase consists of a solid part (soil particles) and a fluid (usually water) that changes the stress of developing a certain pressure, pressure call neutral. This two-phase behavior, historically used to characterise the soils was studied by Terzaghi with principles of effective efforts.
The construction industry is booming as never before, and that is part of this industry knows what immense satisfaction can be derived when a structure is complete. To have played a role in the creation of world class structures is something that any engineer would be proud. The management of construction projects requires knowledge of modern management as well as an understanding of the design and construction process.
